Best Before vs. Use By — What’s the difference?

Best Before

  • Found on long-life foods, drinks, vitamins and supplements.

  • Means the producer guarantees original quality (taste, texture, colour, nutrients) until that date.

  • It does not mean the product is automatically spoiled or unsafe afterwards.

  • Many items (e.g. dry pasta, flour, canned goods, chocolate, vitamins) can remain safe to eat well after the date if properly stored.

  • Differences are mostly sensory: paler colour, softer texture, slightly muted taste — not necessarily unfit for consumption.

Use By

  • Appears on highly perishable foods (meat, fish, milk, ready-to-eat meals).

  • It is a food-safety deadline: after this date, consumption may be hazardous due to microbial growth.

  • After the Use By date, the product must not be eaten or sold — it must be discarded.

Why this distinction matters

  • Many stores discard near-date products even when they are still perfectly edible.

  • Best Before is a quality guideline, not a safety cut-off.

  • BestB4.hu helps ensure these products don’t end up as waste, but reach informed, budget-conscious shoppers.

Disclaimer

BestB4.hu is an advertising platform: it does not sell products; it enables stores to advertise near-expiry items.

  • The store is responsible for the product, its quality, storage, and labelling information.

  • BestB4.hu accepts no liability for listing content or product condition.

  • Consuming a product after its Best Before date is entirely the buyer’s own decision and responsibility.
